Fedia Kryukov's New Blog

When I grew completely sick and tired of writing on the topic “Western media lies about Russia” Fedia Kryukov took the baton from me and started his own blog “Russia in the media”.Here’s an extract from his post “The “Empire of Lies” Strikes Back”:

Our fearless exposer of lies and liars, Alexandra Poolos, further maintains that if you "ask any seemingly cosmopolitan Russians on a downtown Moscow street about their take on the international scandal, [...] they will most likely shrug and suggest that the former spy Alexander Litvinenko poisoned himself just to make Russian President Vladimir Putin look bad." Well, from this I can only assume that Alexandra Poolos never actually bothered to "ask any seemingly cosmopolitan Russians" anything of that nature. Because the polling agencies, those who actually ask such questions as part of their job, came up with somewhat different results. For example, the independent Levada Center conducted a poll between December 8-12 and found that 20% of Russians believe Litvinenko was killed by his former business partners, 15% -- by Boris Berezovsky, 10% -- by Russian special services, 8% -- by western special services, 8% -- he accidentally got poisoned while smuggling radioactive materials, 1% believe it was a suicide. The same poll also asked why Litvinenko was killed. Only 19% of Russians believe it was done to make Russia (14%) or Putin (5%) look bad. Other theories included revenge for something Litvinenko did (15%), due to dangerous information he possessed (14%), in order to create a political emergency in Russia to enable Putin to run for the third term (4%). Thus, Alexandra Poolos's alleged "most likely" replies are possible only from the 9% of respondents who believe Litvinenko killed himself, and the 19% of respondents who believe it was done to damage Russia or Putin. And these two sets don't even necessarily intersect, which would make the number of people who espouse the "most likely" view rather tiny.

Great job, Fedia!

Johnny Depp To Play Alexander Litvinenko?

Showing remarkable restraint, Warner Brothers has waited an entire two months to buy the film rights to the life story of Alexander Litvinenko, the ex-KGB spy who was killed in London last November.

Alan Cowell, The New York Times London Bureau Chief, will be writing a non-fiction book called “Sasha’s Story: The Life and Death of a Russian Spy.” Warner picked up the rights to feed to Johnny Depp’s production company, Infinitum Nihil.

You may remember that Litvinenko was poisoned by polonium-210, with all signs pointing toward Russia as the culprit, unless all you read is People Magazine, in which case, please stop. It has all the makings of a dark, thrilling spy story, and could be a challenging vehicle for Depp to shake off his Captain Jack sleepwalking.

But honestly…two months? I know the guy’s dead and he’s not going to complain, but it’s still disturbing. Cowell may be cashing in just as much as Warner Brothers, but the thought of a book on the subject doesn’t give me the same queasy feeling, maybe because the facts of the case aren’t going to have to be changed so it can compete in the same marketplace as Saw V: The Legend of Jigsaw’s Gold.

Konstantin, you have truly outdone yourself. This is a new low even by your pathetic standards.

The poll you cite to which supposedly shows Russians are well informed about Litvinenko and not oblivious as the author of the ABC piece claims actually shows that nearly half of all Russians are so UNINFORMED about Litvinenko that they have either never heard of him or lack the ability to suggest who his possible killers might be.

Just as many Russians thought the CIA killed him as the KGB, although there is NOT ONE SHRED of evidence or motive for the CIA to do so, and the overwhelming majority, 80%, believe the Kremlin's propaganda line, that forces close to Litveneko or he himself caused the killing.

In other words, this poll clearly shows that ABC was exactly correct. Either you didn't read the poll or you know its contents and are attempting more of your pathetic propaganda. Either way, it's utterly lame.

One might also mention two other points:

(1) While claiming that the Russian media, including state-controlled outlets, had published "hundreds" of stories about Litvinenko, little FEDIA din't like to A SINGLE ONE. Not one.

(2) While claiming that there were hundreds of stories, little FEDIA ignored the fact that HIS OWN DATA, as a commenter pointed out, showed ZERO reports in the Russian media between the time of Litvinenko's poisoning and his demise.

But this is not to say I'm anything other than delighted to see you approve of FEDIA, as it's sure and certain proof of his doom.

It is absolutely clear that Alexander Litvinenko was assassinated by the thugs of Putin as a clear sign that snitches won't be tolerated... Everyone knows that! The level of corruption in Russia is just so big that objectivity has completely disappeared. So sad!

But, mind you, Russia does have a monopoly on corruption, how do you think large international firms do win contracts in Indonesia, Malaysia, China, Costa Rica and even France, just to name a few???!
