In 1986, Peter Duesberg became a member of the National Academy of Sciences and was considered a probable candidate for the Nobel Prize. Next year, his career crashed. In 1987, Duesberg published an article in which he claimed that the HIV retrovirus doesn't - and cannot possibly - cause AIDS.
The consequences for his career were devastating. Colleagues branded his views not only wrong but dangerous. Scientific magazines stopped publishing his articles and, most harmfully, the financing of his research was cancelled. The scientific community all but set up a boycott of the reckless scientist. If Duesberg had admitted his mistake, everything would have been back to normal. But he always had a reputation as an uncompromising scientist. Eighteen years later, Duesberg still argues that HIV is a harmless passenger virus, while AIDS is caused by completely different factors.
Yesterday I talked about this interview with my friend who has a doctoral degree in medicine. He wasn’t surprised at all. He said that almost all AIDS research projects financed by the government agencies in Russia came to same conclusion – HIV doesn’t cause AIDS. Although the prevailing theory is that HIV virus is a so called ‘satellite virus’, the one that simply “accompanies” people with weak immunity. He participated in a research project in Kaliningrad that has the highest rate if HIV infected teenagers in Russia. When the research team didn’t found causal relationship between HIV and AIDS, the project was immediately terminated. “Actually, - he told me, - most of medical researchers in Russia know that Duesberg was right. That’s the main reason why Russian government itself spends kopecks on anti-AIDS projects but accepts international grants eagerly.” I was struck dumb from astonishment. “But why didn’t they say out load?” Now he smiled indulgently at my naivet?. “Can you imagine how many people became rich and famous fighting AIDS?”
Then I remembered similar stories. For example, 2k problem. At first, the Russian government took very seriously. A special committee studied the problem for six months and came to the conclusion that 2k is a scam. American and European media was hysterical about Russian irresponsibility. On the eve of 2000 the US Embassy in Moscow recommended that all Americans leave the country before the catastrophe. 2k problem turned out to be what it was – a scam. Nobody said, “Hey, Russians were right.” Does anyone know how many billions of dollars software developers made out of that scare?

To summarize, The central claim of the virusmyth-ologists is that nobody has proved that HIV causes AIDS. But the scientific method does not demand absolute proof of a theory -- it only demands that there is no DISproof. And there has not been found a substantial population of people suffering from AIDS who do not have HIV or some other known ailment such as congenital immunodeficiency.
Russian scientists believe all kinds of wacky things that they think are unknown in the West ... I knew one dentist in Russia who thought that electric toothbrushes should not be used because they emit harmful radiation. This is nothing more than an adaptation of popular superstition to modern scientific concepts.

That is completely unknown. Most tests for HIV are highly inconclusive and in fact most people in the world with "AIDS" are never even tested for HIV. Because popular science defines AIDS as being the result of HIV, they assume a priori without testing that if someone has AIDS then they also have HIV.

No one would become rich. "AIDS" can be combatted by strengthening people's immune systems: keeping them off drugs, keeping them well fed, keeping them from contracting STDs.

Quite a task you gave us. It's really hard to imagine how anybody became rich and famous by revealing that HIV is a fraud. Duesberg for instance became about 40 times poorer.

In my opinion, what's important for humans isn't whether or not the "HIV->AIDS" concept is wrong or not. In fact, I couldn't care less about AIDS itself. What's important is that
1) Irresponsible sexual activities can and are bloody likely to transmit diseases, the same way you're bound to catch a cold if you and a friend decide to sneeze eachother in the face back and forth when he has one. Or any other activities
2) Irresponsible treatment of bodily fluids or tissue. For instance, there are cases where people have gotten contaminated bloodtransplants and through that way as caught one disease or another. Other ways you can get diseases like that is not treating your wounds well and letting them get infected. Though there are naturally cases where you get injured in the accident that contaminates you, for instance accidentally getting a wound via a dirty object, or insect bite.
But yeah, bottom line is that though it's important that one doesn't live in a fear culture, one also needs to not behave like an idiot about taking care of oneself. That is something far too many do, for instance via having casual unprotected sex. If people want to have sex frequently, then sure, they can do as they want to. I'm not going to tell anyone they can't get to get laid. However, just because they want to have sex doesn't mean that they can happily endanger themselves and others by not acting responsible about it.

You might have a point, if the hypothsis had ever been proved in the first place. It seems you have accepted the straw man reasoning of your source, now to be found here. The Kary Mullis quote he takes as his departure point is as follows:
"If there is evidence that HIV causes AIDS, there should be scientific documents which either singly or collectively demonstrate that fact, at least with a high probability. There is no such document."
From here he launches into an ontological argument on the impossibility of "absolute" proof. But Mullis did not ask for absolute proof. He asked for the hypothesis to be proved to "a high degree of probability." In short, he asked for the application of the scientific method to the hypothesis in question: Is HIV the cause of AIDS? Mullis has written extensively on his fruitless quest for a peer reviewed study that affirmatively demonstrates that hypothesis. He concluded that there there was no scientific paper to source the belief that HIV is the probable cause of AIDS. Not even the absolute cause. The probable cause.

Personally, I don't think either the epidemiological data, nor the testing reliability, are strong enough to make this assertion, at this time, but that is an area far too involved to fit into a comment.

No. This has been well answered here, but I must add that, no, I really can't imagine a scenario in which that would become lucrative. Certainly not as lucrative as high profile jobs in the NIH and the pharmaceutical companies have been. If there is money to be made down the line, the HIV dissidents have one hell of a long-term strategy and a willingness to lose revenue on the front end. Duesberg has been unable to get grants, has lost his staff, has lost his position in the scientific community. Journalists like Celia Farber have imperiled their careers. These people have been willing to accept pariah status and extreme damage to their careers because of their determination to articulate and/or report a dissenting viewpoint. Principled stands against the status quo are often like that. Lucrative? Hardly.
